Integrating Career Development Learning into your Curriculum

There is no definitive way to integrate Career Development Learning (CDL) outcomes into the curriculum. Some disciplines may choose to develop complete Career Development Learning courses, or place them within Professional Development and WIL Courses,  while others  may decide to integrate concepts across all courses in a program. The important feature is that all students get the opportunity to develop their career development skills and knowledge in a scaffolded and meaningful way. For CDL to be relevant to the student it must be engaging and draw on the real world of work and a student's individual experience. It must allow students to reflect on their own motivations and values, and synthesise their understanding into a personal career path. This type of learning often provides a challenge to more traditional classroom styles and full adoption must be supported by institutional change and development of new  staff competencies. Students must be placed at the centre of the learning process and given the tools to reflect on their own personal values and experiences to develop their own preferred career identity. Central to this process is the use of reflection as a tool for students to make sense, practice and apply their understanding to a variety of situations.  CDL is not a simple linear learning process but involves iteration as new understandings are gained. Any intended activity to embed CDL should include student centered activity and the capacity for reflection. Suggested process for embedding CDL in programs
  1. Background research on knowledge and skill requirements of discipline related  professions including predictions of future developments
  2. Identification of current CDL content and practises through the mapping of programs and courses
  3. Locating, designing and delivering  resources, activities and assessment 
  4. Evaluating the impact of change.
